So you’ve read the headlines and seen the hype—what is all this talk about preparation, and what do you actually need to know before working with psilocybin?
If you’re feeling called to psychedelic assisted therapy work and want grounded, personalized support, I offer gentle private preparation and integration coaching to help you enter your journey with clarity and care—whether you’re exploring this path here in the U.S. or abroad. For those seeking information and education we've put together this introductory guide. It does not serve as medical, or legal advice but simply educational beginner friendly information.
Why Preparation Is Essential
Any well-trained and experienced facilitator, space holder, guide, or medical provider will require their clients to complete a series of preparation protocols before engaging in psychedelic-assisted therapy. This preparation is not optional—it is foundational to the safety and effectiveness of the work. Some providers recommend a minimum of three months of preparation, which can include adopting daily lifestyle practices, building self-awareness, and sometimes incorporating a microdosing protocol to gently introduce the body, mind, and spirit to the medicine being used. Others may require a minimum of three weeks. In truth, anything less than three weeks of intentional preparation is not thorough and can limit the benefits of the experience while increasing potential risks.
Preparation matters because psilocybin tends to amplify what is already present within you. If your body is dysregulated, your mind overwhelmed, or your environment filled with stress and negativity, that will often surface during the journey. The goal of preparation is to reduce fear, reduce anxiety, and limit the amount of negative input your system is carrying so that you can enter the experience feeling more grounded, safe, and open.
preparing the body
One of the simplest and most impactful ways to begin is by cleaning up your diet to support the health of your gut's microbiome, sleep, and brain health. All of these work extra hard during and after your journey and its best to train them early and provide them strength. Eating more whole, natural foods and reducing processed foods and sugar helps regulate your body, mood, sleep, and nervous system. When your body feels lighter and more balanced, you are less likely to experience physical discomfort that can turn into anxiety during the journey. Alongside this, increasing water intake and reducing alcohol, caffeine, and sugary drinks supports emotional regulation. Stimulants can heighten anxiety and make it harder to surrender, while alcohol and other substances can interfere with clarity and integration.
We recommend our clients adopt a tea ritual bringing in natural benefits and the practice of mindfulness by steeping natural loose leaf herbal teas which are locally sourced (where possible). Our favorite locally grown and harvested herbal tea comes from our friend Rita at Yerba Botanicals.

💡 Tip: Rotate seasonal fruits and adaptogens to keep your bowl exciting and in tune with nature.
Connecting With Nature
Spending time in nature is another important part of preparation. Walking, sitting outside, or simply slowing down in a natural environment helps regulate your nervous system and lowers stress levels. Psychedelic experiences often deepen your connection to nature, so beginning that relationship beforehand creates a sense of familiarity and safety rather than overwhelm. In the same way, it’s important to reduce exposure to negative inputs. What you watch, listen to, and engage with mentally becomes material your mind may process during the experience. Limiting violent media, excessive news, and draining interactions helps protect your mental and emotional state. For our coaching clients we "prescribe" nature time, following in the vein of natural medicine work as well as evidence based methods such as Carl Jung's practice of prescribing nature to his clients.
"Whenever we touch nature we get clean...Walking in the woods, lying on the grass, taking a bath in the sea, are from the outside; entering the unconscious, entering yourself through dreams, is touching nature from the inside...things are put right again." Carl Jung.
We encourage nature practices such as grounding (walking barefoot in nature mindfully), going for nature walks in your backyard or making a special occasion and taking a drive. This path is in our backyard just 5 minutes from our venue. There is nothing quite like wildflower appreciation walks. We enjoy walking regularly and documenting the impermanence of nature through capturing the simple beauty of wildflowers, like this pink fairy-like native flower called Apache Plume.
Mental And Emotional Preparation
Simple daily practices like gratitude and journaling can also have a powerful impact. Taking a few moments each morning and night to focus on what you’re grateful for helps shift your internal state toward safety and trust. Journaling allows you to clarify your intentions, acknowledge fears, and bring unconscious patterns into awareness. This doesn’t control the experience, but it helps you enter it with more clarity and less resistance. Example prompts can include reflecting on your own personal "why". Avoid rigid expectations in your journal and use open ended questions that allow you to write in a stream of consciousness free form manner. For our coaching clients, we offer crafted writing prompts that we've developed specific to this nature of work through guided writing workshops before, during and after their own journey work. An example, could be asking yourself and then setting a timer for 5 minutes to free write on this question. What have I been avoiding lately?
Environmental Preparation
In the days leading up to the journey, many facilitators also recommend reducing stimulation—this can include limiting sexual activity, heavy foods like excess meat, and recreational substances. This isn’t about restriction, but about creating space and sensitivity so the experience can come through more clearly without distraction or interference.
Preparation is not about being perfect. It’s about aligning your body, mind, and environment so that when you step into the experience, you are as supported as possible. When you take the time to care for your system in this way, you reduce resistance and increase your capacity to receive what the experience has to offer.
New Mexico's Pioneering Psilocybin Program
For medical patients who qualify, New Mexico has been a frontier for underground work and now a leader in legal medical access. For those who don't know, Senate Bill 219 is a pioneering piece of legislation across the country, reflecting New Mexico’s deep commitment to accessibility, earth-based wisdom, and a cultural value of looking out for one another. Signed into law in 2025, the Medical Psilocybin Act establishes a regulated system for the therapeutic use of psilocybin to support conditions such as depression, PTSD, substance use, and end-of-life care, while prioritizing safety, research, and community-informed implementation.
What makes this moment unique is not just the law itself, but how it’s being brought to life. The state is actively developing a structured program that includes licensed providers, trained facilitators, authorized growers, and an advisory board made up of voices across disciplines—including medicine, behavioral health, veteran focused work, equity advocacy, and Indigenous representation. Across 2026, New Mexicans from a wide range of backgrounds—science, medicine, alternative healing, cultivation, preparation and integration coaching, and experienced space holders—are coming together to educate, collaborate, and build the foundation for this work. Through weekly and monthly offerings, trainings, and community-led efforts, the intention is to bring the first legal medical patients into well-supported care by early 2027, as the state continues to roll out its full program.
Care is expected to be anchored in major hubs like Albuquerque, Santa Fe, Taos, Roswell, and Las Cruces, while also expanding beyond these centers into smaller and rural communities where access to healing support has historically been limited. There is also growing consideration for psychedelic travelers who meet medical eligibility requirements, positioning New Mexico as a place where both residents and visitors can access care within a regulated and well-supported framework
Support For Your Psychedelic Journey
In many ways, this is the beginning of a new chapter—one where ancient practices and modern systems are being thoughtfully woven together, with preparation, safety, and community at the center.
Many people have historically traveled to places like Netherlands or countries in South America to access these medicines legally, while others are navigating evolving access here in the United States. Wherever you are in your journey—and whatever medicine you are working with—you don’t have to do it alone. As a certified psychedelic coach, I offer legal, supportive coaching for both preparation and integration, before and after your experience.
