Artistic Process:
Magic In Me is a series born from decades of inner child work with the artist’s teachers. Through reparenting herself to heal the deficits of her childhood, she was guided to translate this process into color. The work meant giving her inner child unlimited freedom to play, create, and express what had long been suppressed—to release the silence imposed by her abusers.
Letting go of cost, time, productivity, ego, and outcomes, “Big Patricia” stepped aside while “Little Patricia” took over the studio. Little Patricia had free rein—buying whatever supplies she wanted and painting however she wished.
Over phone calls with her niece in California, the two girls reveled in chats about the pure joy of creation. Together, they chose the sweetest colors, smaller canvases, and the idea to abandon tools like brushes and carving knives for the immediacy and joy of finger painting.
She painted through old feelings of rage, fear, violence, and chaos that she felt in her home of origin. When finished she looked at her work and found portals in each piece. Portals which uncovered the vision she had always carried: a more peaceful home, a more peaceful world. A brighter tomorrow. A reminder that in releasing what haunts us, we open portals to freedom and discover the paths that are truly our own.
